Support for Ukrainian Journalists
Since the beginning of Ukrainian protests dozens of journalists have become victims of violent attacks. n-ost supports independent and investigative journalists. Please help!
On the night of February 19 the Ukrainian journalist Vyacheslav Veremi died of his injuries in a hospital in Kiev. Apparently he had been attacked by so-called "Titushki", government affiliated thugs. The Kiev Institute of Mass Information offers a daily updated list of cases of journalists who were injured, some seriously, as a result of clashes or targeted attacks on them - on 18 February alone there were at least 28 journalist victims.
Independent journalists play a key role in the dramatic and confusing situation these hours. At the same time many of the Euromaidan related Ukrainians are disappointed by Europe - the Europe, on which they had pinned their hopes at the beginning of the protests.
Together with the network for Investigative Journalism SCOOP we call for donations and hope to provide our Ukrainian journalist colleagues with concrete assistance and send them a signal of solidarity at the same time.
With your donation you support equally three projects that stand for independent and investigative journalism in Ukraine:
- the independent internet TV channel Hromadske.tv
... which in recent weeks has become a central source of information on the Euromaidan and reaches over a million viewers every day. Established only in November 2013, and independent of the funds of Ukrainian oligarchs it offers live coverage, interviews and talk shows. A weekly program that is specifically devoted to investigative topics is in the planning.
- the media-political NGO "Institute for Mass Information"
... which offers in-depth analysis and a monthly press freedom barometer, as well as legal assistance and training and thus provides protection to independent journalists in Ukraine.
- and the English-language weekly newspaper Kyiv Post,
... which provides all-day-news and analysis on the anti-Yanukovych protests, has realized multi-award-winning investigative stories and plays a bridging role as an English-language media that is produced predominantly by Ukrainians.
Our persons of trust in these three projects will use your donation to support colleagues who are in a special emergency situation (legal aid, medical help, support for their families) or for investigative projects that contribute to the elucidation of human rights violations in the context of the Maidan protests.
